Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing/If You Could Hie to Kolob (Cover)
As we continue on our Lenten journey, a couple of our Young Musicians of Faith (Emily Denler and Jane Haracz) and I would love to share this fascinating piece with you all.
This arrangement is a mashup of two hymns. The first, "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing", is of course a common and rather popular hymn to all Christian denominations. The second, "If You Could Hie to Kolob", actually comes to us from the church of Latter Day Saints. In essence, Kolob refers to what we would understand as heaven, and to "hie" is to "hasten". So the hymn pairs well with "Come Thou Fount" as they both are an earnest prayer to be close with God (something we seek as followers throughout the year but especially during Lent!).
The interesting contrast between these two hymns seems to be in the perspective. The text of "Come Thou Fount" is introspective and centers around our own hearts. "If You Could Hie" explores the concept of eternity, how God has no beginning and no end. Since before time and space began, God was there, and as we walk through this journey of life, he is with us.
We can rest safe in the knowledge that the God of this grand, vast universe cares for each of us, and we have an eternity to spend alongside him. It's definitely something great to sing about. :)
